Tips for ideal oral health

Maintaining a beautiful smile is easy with proper oral hygiene and regular trips to the dentist. Both are important as brushing and flossing daily and will prevent many dental problems, but you avoid more serious issues with regular visits to a dental professional. Here are some tips for maintaining a healthy and bright smile:

Your At-Home Oral Hygiene Routine

Brushing in the morning and at night for two minutes is vital for oral health. A toothbrush with soft bristles and ADA approval ensures that you get the most out of your oral hygiene routine. The soft bristles reach the nooks and crannies between teeth and reduce the chances of damaging enamel or scraping gums. A good electric toothbrush can produce even better results. Tilt the brush toward the gum line and brush in tooth-wide strokes, covering the entire surface of the tooth. Short, gentle strokes are effective. It is also best to replace your toothbrush or brush attachment every three months.

Flossing is as important as brushing. Flossing removes food particles and germs that your toothbrush cannot reach. Germs in the crevices and pockets surrounding teeth cause tooth decay and gum disease. Start with an 18 to 22-inch piece of floss and use a new section for every tooth.

You further eliminate germs and avoid bad breath with mouthwash and a tongue scraper.

Routine Dental Visits for Prevention

Despite maintaining good oral hygiene, it is still necessary to visit a dentist. Plaque and tartar often form in hard to reach areas of the mouth. Professional dental tools remove this stubborn material. By preventing tooth decay and gum disease, a dental professional reduces your chances of tooth and bone loss.

A Healthy Diet Promotes Healthy Teeth

Foods with a lot of sugar attract potentially harmful oral bacteria and lead to tooth decay while crunchy fruits and vegetables clean the teeth. The fiber scrapes away germs and helps produce saliva. Saliva neutralizes the acid in your mouth and assists in the prevention of tooth decay. The acid in citrus drinks can erode enamel so rinsing the mouth with water after their consumption is advised. Drinking with a straw lessens the contact of your teeth with dark, staining beverages.

Avoid Tobacco Products

Smoking and tobacco products cause teeth to yellow and irritate the gums. It depletes the bloodstream of oxygen. With less oxygen, the gums are also more vulnerable to infection. Try to avoid tobacco products.
